Alienware AW2725DM Review: QHD, 180Hz and Strong Connectivity for $269.99
The Alienware AW2725DM is a 27-inch QHD gaming monitor built around a Fast IPS panel, a native 180Hz refresh rate over DisplayPort and broad adaptive-sync support. Its adjustable stand, dual HDMI inputs, USB hub and console-focused controls make it flexible for a PC-and-console setup. The main compromises are modest DisplayHDR 400 performance, a 144Hz native-resolution limit over HDMI, no USB-C and no built-in audio.
Video summary
Steve unboxes and assembles the AW2725DM, highlights its tool-free stand installation, built-in power supply and included HDMI, DisplayPort and USB cables, then connects it to a PC and PlayStation 5. The hands-on demonstration covers the joystick-driven menu, USB charging, AlienVision targeting tools, HDR playback and the visible smoothness improvement when moving from 60Hz to 180Hz on PC. The PS5 recognizes 1440p with HDR and up to 120Hz, while the monitor can also accept a 4K 60Hz console signal and scale it to its native 2560 x 1440 panel. Steve considers the 400-nit HDR capability usable rather than especially bright and points out that the monitor has no speakers.
Tech Steve Takeaway
The AW2725DM is a practical choice for shoppers who prioritize smooth QHD gaming, flexible ergonomics and support for both a PC and consoles. Use DisplayPort to access the full 180Hz capability; console users can get 1440p at up to 120Hz, but anyone seeking impactful HDR, USB-C connectivity or integrated audio should look elsewhere.
Image and color quality
The 27-inch Fast IPS panel combines 2560 x 1440 resolution with a specified 95% DCI-P3 color gamut and 1.07 billion supported colors. QHD provides a useful balance of desktop detail and manageable GPU demands at this screen size. The anti-glare 3H coating is designed to control reflections, while the IPS construction supports practical viewing from different positions. Dell specifies a typical 1000:1 contrast ratio, so deep-black performance is not a primary strength.
HDR performance
The monitor is VESA DisplayHDR 400 certified and offers Desktop, Movie HDR, Game HDR, Custom Color HDR and DisplayHDR 400 profiles. Dell specifies 400 cd/m² typical panel brightness and 400 cd/m² peak brightness in DisplayHDR 400 mode. HDR content is supported, but Steve found the 400-nit capability modest rather than a major HDR showcase. Preset modes, brightness, contrast and Dark Stabilizer controls are unavailable while HDR is active.
Gaming performance
DisplayPort 1.4 supports the native 2560 x 1440 resolution at up to 180Hz. The two HDMI 2.1 TMDS inputs are limited to 2560 x 1440 at up to 144Hz, while PS5 operation includes 1440p at up to 120Hz with HDR. Adaptive-sync support covers NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible, AMD FreeSync and VESA AdaptiveSync. Dell rates gray-to-gray response at 4ms in Fast mode, 2ms in Super Fast mode and 1ms in Extreme mode; the 1ms figure is a response-time rating, not a measured input-lag result. AlienVision, Dark Stabilizer and Game Enhance tools provide additional gaming overlays and visibility options.
Motion handling
The 180Hz PC demonstration appeared substantially smoother than 60Hz in the TestUFO sequence. Adaptive refresh can synchronize the display with compatible NVIDIA or AMD graphics hardware to reduce tearing and stutter. The full 180Hz rate requires DisplayPort; HDMI tops out at 144Hz at the panel's native resolution.
Built-in audio
The AW2725DM has no built-in speakers and Dell lists no headphone output, optical output or HDMI eARC connection. Users will need speakers or headphones connected directly to their PC, console, controller or another audio device.
Creator tools and connectivity
A rear joystick provides access to gaming presets, input selection, display controls, HDR profiles, PIP/PBP and personalization options. AlienVision includes selectable crosshair and visibility overlays, while Game Enhance Mode can display a timer or live frame-rate counter. The monitor can notify the user when it detects a second active source. Its USB hub includes two 5Gbps USB-A downstream ports, with one supporting USB Battery Charging 1.2, but the Type-B upstream connection must be attached to the computer for USB data functions.
Calibration and color accuracy
The available SDR presets include Standard, FPS, MOBA/RTS, RPG, Sports, three customizable Game modes, Warm, Cool, sRGB and Custom Color. HDR provides five separate Smart HDR profiles. Console Mode adds manual RGB and gamma controls plus source-based HDR tone mapping, but normal preset modes are unavailable while Console Mode is enabled.
What we like
- Native 2560 x 1440 at up to 180Hz over DisplayPort delivers a strong combination of detail and smooth motion
- Fast IPS panel offers practical viewing angles and specified 95% DCI-P3 color coverage
- NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible, AMD FreeSync and VESA AdaptiveSync support provide broad GPU compatibility
- Two HDMI inputs and one DisplayPort allow a PC and multiple consoles or media sources to remain connected
- Height, tilt, swivel and pivot adjustments make it easier to align the screen in multi-monitor and portrait setups
- Console Mode provides source-based HDR tone mapping plus manual RGB and gamma controls
- Two-port USB-A hub includes a port with USB Battery Charging 1.2
- PIP and PBP can display two connected sources simultaneously
- HDMI, DisplayPort and USB upstream cables are included
What to consider
- DisplayHDR 400 and 400-nit peak brightness provide only an entry-level HDR experience
- The full 180Hz native-resolution refresh rate requires DisplayPort; HDMI is limited to 144Hz at QHD
- HDMI ports use TMDS signaling rather than higher-bandwidth FRL operation
- No USB-C video input or USB-C power delivery for a one-cable laptop connection
- No built-in speakers, headphone output, optical audio output or HDMI eARC
- The advertised 1ms gray-to-gray response applies only to Extreme mode; other modes are rated at 2ms or 4ms
- Normal preset modes are unavailable when Console Mode is enabled
- Several picture controls are locked while HDR content is active
Tech Steve verdict
The Alienware AW2725DM is strongest as an affordable, versatile QHD gaming monitor. PC gamers get the best experience through DisplayPort, where the Fast IPS panel can run at its full 180Hz with adaptive sync. Console players benefit from two HDMI inputs, 1440p at up to 120Hz on PS5, HDR support and dedicated console controls. Its adjustable stand, USB hub, included cables and multi-source features also make it useful for a mixed gaming and productivity desk. The tradeoffs are entry-level HDR brightness, HDMI being limited to 144Hz at QHD, no USB-C video or power delivery and no integrated audio. Buy it for smooth QHD gaming and flexible connectivity, not for premium HDR or a one-cable laptop setup.
