HDR performance
HDR10, HDR10+ Adaptive, HDR10+ Gaming, HDR10+ Advanced and HLG are supported, but Dolby Vision is not. Tech Steve measured 1,033 nits in HDR while using Dynamic mode on the reviewed unit and observed brighter highlights with additional shadow detail. Because Dynamic mode is designed for visual impact rather than strict accuracy, Movie or Filmmaker Mode will generally be the more appropriate starting point for cinematic viewing.
Gaming performance
Gaming is one of the QN80H's strongest areas. All four HDMI inputs support signals up to 4K at 144Hz, along with VRR and ALLM. Compatible PCs can reach up to 240Hz by reducing the input resolution to 1080p. Samsung also provides FreeSync Premium Pro, HGiG, HDR10+ Gaming, Game Motion Plus, Dynamic Black EQ, virtual aiming points and map zoom. Tech Steve demonstrated PlayStation 5 gaming at up to 4K/120Hz and found the image detailed, colorful and largely free of visible tearing or smearing.
Motion handling
Tech Steve described 24 fps movie motion as decent and suitably cinematic. The Custom Picture Clarity menu allows separate blur- and judder-reduction adjustments, although aggressive settings can create a soap-opera effect. He advised against LED Clear Motion because it made the image too dark. Sixty-frame-per-second material appeared noticeably smoother and was recommended for sports, but some stutter remained visible in the test pattern.
Sound quality
The QN80H uses a 30-watt, two-channel speaker system with Dolby Atmos and Object Tracking Sound Lite processing. Active Voice Amplifier Pro is designed to improve dialogue when room noise is present, while Adaptive Sound Pro adjusts processing for the program and room. Q-Symphony allows the TV speakers to operate alongside a compatible Samsung soundbar. The two-channel hardware is functional for everyday viewing, but a soundbar remains the more suitable option for a wider and more powerful presentation.
Smart TV experience
The QN80H runs Tizen with Samsung One UI and can be configured with either the remote or the SmartThings mobile application. Tech Steve found SmartThings to be the easier setup method.
