TCL QM8K Review: Bright QD-Mini LED Picture, Strong Motion and 4K 144Hz Gaming
The 2025 TCL QM8K combines a bright QD-Mini LED backlight, quantum-dot color, full-array local dimming and a native 144Hz panel. Tech Steve found the reviewed TV colorful, smooth and impressively accurate in Movie mode, with deep-looking blacks and strong performance for movies and sports. Its gaming package includes 4K at 144Hz, VRR, ALLM and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, although only two HDMI inputs support the highest-bandwidth gaming features. Built-in B&O-tuned audio is more ambitious than a basic TV system, but shoppers wanting deeper bass should still consider external audio.

Picture quality
The QM8K uses a CrystGlow WHVA LCD panel with quantum-dot color, a dense Mini LED backlight and full-array local dimming. Tech Steve observed a bright, detailed image with vivid color and deep-looking black levels. He considered Movie mode accurate out of the box, with only a slight red push, and said skin tones appeared natural across the demonstrated material. The AiPQ Pro Processor handles contrast, color, clarity and upscaling. Lower-resolution 720p and 1080p material looked progressively cleaner, but 480p sources remained soft and should not be expected to resemble native 4K.
HDR performance
HDR support includes Dolby Vision, Dolby Vision IQ, Dolby Vision Gaming, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG. TCL advertises up to HDR5000 peak brightness for the series; this is a peak laboratory claim rather than a sustained full-screen rating. Tech Steve's demonstrations showed a very bright presentation across HDR and Dolby Vision material. Dolby Vision Dark was presented as the nighttime option, while Dolby Vision Bright was suggested for daytime viewing. IMAX Enhanced support provides another movie-oriented HDR presentation.
Gaming performance
The physical panel has a native 144Hz refresh rate and supports up to 4K at 144Hz. Gaming features include VRR, ALLM, AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and Dolby Vision Gaming. Two of the four HDMI inputs support the television's highest-bandwidth 4K 144Hz functions. TCL's Game Accelerator 288 can reach up to 288Hz only by reducing the input resolution to 1080p; it is not a 4K 288Hz mode and does not change the panel's native 144Hz specification.
Motion handling
Tech Steve described motion as fantastic for sports and smooth during movie demonstrations. The panel's native refresh rate is 144Hz. TCL's Motion Rate 480 label refers to MEMC-based motion enhancement and should not be confused with the physical panel refresh rate. As with other televisions, motion processing may need to be adjusted for 24-frame-per-second films depending on whether the viewer prefers cinematic cadence or a smoother presentation.
Sound quality
The integrated Audio by Bang & Olufsen system includes upward-firing speakers and two rear woofers, with support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Available sound modes include Movie, Speech, Music, Games, Night, Sports and Custom, while the BeoSonic controls offer additional tonal adjustment. Tech Steve found the built-in sound good overall but wanted deeper bass. HDMI eARC, optical digital output and Bluetooth provide options for adding external audio, and the eARC connection does not occupy either of the two 4K 144Hz gaming inputs.
Smart TV experience
Google TV supplies the streaming interface, app platform and content recommendations. The QM8K includes Chromecast, Apple AirPlay 2, hands-free Google Assistant support, Alexa compatibility, HomeKit/Siri control and a backlit voice remote. An ATSC 3.0-capable tuner is included for compatible over-the-air broadcasts. Art Mode can display included artwork, personal photos or generated visuals when the TV is not being used for regular viewing.
Calibration notes
Movie mode is the recommended starting point for an accurate SDR image. Tech Steve found it accurate out of the box apart from a slight red push and suggested that many owners may not require professional calibration. Filmmaker Mode is another restrained option, while Vivid, Sports and Game modes produce a brighter presentation. Because panel samples and rooms vary, use familiar skin tones and neutral gray material to confirm whether further adjustment is worthwhile.
