TCL X11L 85-Inch Unboxing and First Impressions: A Massive SQD-Mini LED Flagship

The 2026 TCL X11L is a premium 4K SQD-Mini LED television offered in 75-, 85- and 98-inch sizes. This first look focuses on the 85X11L, pairing a native 144 Hz WHVA 2.0 Ultra Panel with 14,400 local-dimming zones, a manufacturer-claimed peak HDR brightness of up to 10,000 nits and four HDMI 2.1 inputs supporting 4K at 144 Hz. Tech Steve found the demo image exceptionally bright, colorful and contrast-rich, while also praising the responsive Google TV interface and powerful integrated sound. Its considerable weight, wide feet and premium starting price require careful planning.

Video summary

Tech Steve unboxes and sets up the 85-inch TCL X11L with help, emphasizing the television's substantial size and weight. The protective crate and sectional packaging allow the TV to be unpacked in a room with standard-height ceilings, while the heavy metal feet require careful installation by multiple people. He highlights the premium rear design, integrated cable management, four HDMI 2.1 connections and eARC support. After setup, he finds Google TV fast and responsive, demonstrates Google Gemini features, and notes support for AirPlay, HomeKit, casting and Bluetooth headphones. His initial picture impressions are of an extremely bright, vibrant image with excellent apparent contrast and smooth-looking 24 fps and 60 fps content. He also praises the integrated Bang & Olufsen-tuned audio and previews gaming features including ALLM, VRR, AMD FreeSync, HGiG, aiming aids, shadow controls and the Game Bar. This is an unboxing and first-impressions assessment rather than a complete calibrated performance review.

Bottom line

Tech Steve Takeaway

The 85-inch X11L is aimed at shoppers who want a theater-sized, exceptionally bright Mini LED flagship without immediately adding an external sound system. Its 14,400-zone backlight, four 4K/144 Hz HDMI inputs and responsive Google TV platform make it particularly compelling for bright rooms, HDR entertainment and multi-console setups. Budget for a wide stand or professional wall installation, and remember that the advertised 288 Hz gaming mode drops the input resolution to 1080p.

The TCL X11L combines a full-array SQD-Mini LED backlight, Super QLED quantum-dot color system and anti-reflective WHVA 2.0 Ultra Panel. Every size supports native 4K at up to 144 Hz, Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, Google TV and four HDMI 2.1 inputs. Size-specific backlights range from 11,520 zones on the 75-inch model to 20,736 zones on the 98-inch model. A 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen-tuned system is built in, with optional Dolby Atmos FlexConnect wireless expansion.

Picture quality

Tech Steve's initial demo viewing showed punchy color, intense brightness and impressive apparent contrast. The SQD-Mini LED backlight, Super QLED quantum-dot color system and 14,400 local-dimming zones on the 85-inch model are designed to provide precise backlight control. The WHVA 2.0 Ultra Panel includes an anti-reflective surface and enhanced viewing-angle design. These are preliminary visual impressions rather than calibrated measurements.

HDR performance

The X11L supports Dolby Vision IQ, Dolby Vision Bright, Dolby Vision Dark, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG. TCL claims up to 10,000 nits of peak HDR brightness for the 85- and 98-inch models, while the 75-inch model carries a size-specific claim of up to 9,000 nits. Tech Steve described the 85-inch demo as extremely bright with vibrant color and strong contrast, but the peak figures are manufacturer claims rather than measured results from this first look.

Gaming performance

All four HDMI inputs support HDMI 2.1 features and up to 4K at 144 Hz. The television also supports VRR, ALLM, AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, HGiG, Game Mode and an on-screen Game Bar with frame-rate information, aiming aids and shadow controls. Game Accelerator 288 can accept up to 288 Hz only when the input resolution is reduced to 1080p; the maximum verified refresh rate at native 4K resolution remains 144 Hz. HDMI 1 is the eARC connection, leaving three HDMI inputs available for source devices when eARC is in use.

Motion handling

The X11L uses a native 144 Hz panel across all three sizes. Tech Steve found both 24 fps and 60 fps demo material smooth during his initial viewing. A complete evaluation of film judder, motion interpolation and fast-action artifacts was not part of this first look.

Sound quality

Tech Steve described the integrated sound as especially impressive, noting speakers across the television and rear-mounted drivers that help create a spacious presentation. The system was engineered and tuned with Bang & Olufsen, uses 12 integrated speaker units and supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Buyers can expand it with up to four optional TCL Z100 wireless speakers and one Z100-SW wireless subwoofer through Dolby Atmos FlexConnect; those accessories are sold separately.

Smart TV experience

Google TV felt fast and responsive during setup, without the lag Tech Steve associated with some earlier models. The platform includes Google Gemini conversational features, Chromecast built-in, Apple AirPlay 2 and Apple HomeKit compatibility. The review unit reported Android 14 and approximately 52 GB of internal storage. The Bluetooth voice remote supports hands-free content searches, and Bluetooth headphones can be paired for private listening.

Calibration notes

No calibrated picture measurements were included in this first look. Available SDR modes include Vivid, Low Power, Sports, Filmmaker Mode, Movie, Game, PC and Intelligent. Dolby Vision selections include Dolby Vision IQ, Dolby Vision Bright and Dolby Vision Dark. Movie or Filmmaker Mode should provide the most appropriate starting point for accuracy-focused viewing before room-specific adjustment.

What we like

  • Native 144 Hz 4K panel across every screen size
  • All four HDMI 2.1 inputs support up to 4K at 144 Hz, providing room for multiple current-generation gaming systems
  • Size-specific backlights provide 11,520 to 20,736 local-dimming zones for fine control of highlights and dark areas
  • Manufacturer peak-HDR claims reach 9,000 nits on the 75-inch model and 10,000 nits on the 85- and 98-inch models
  • Supports Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+ and both major dynamic-metadata HDR ecosystems
  • Anti-reflective WHVA 2.0 Ultra Panel is designed for bright rooms and wider seating arrangements
  • Responsive Google TV experience with Gemini, Chromecast built-in and AirPlay 2
  • Bang & Olufsen-tuned 12-speaker system provides stronger integrated audio than a basic television speaker system
  • Dolby Atmos FlexConnect offers an optional wireless surround and subwoofer upgrade path
  • Slim 0.8- to 0.9-inch cabinet and integrated cable management support a clean installation

What to consider

  • Game Accelerator 288 operates at reduced 1080p resolution; native 4K gaming is limited to 144 Hz
  • Widely spaced feet require furniture approximately 58.9 to 78.9 inches wide, depending on screen size
  • The large, heavy cabinets require multiple people for setup, with professional wall installation advisable for the 85- and 98-inch sizes
  • TCL Z100 surround speakers and the Z100-SW subwoofer are optional and not included
  • Using HDMI 1 for eARC leaves three HDMI inputs available for consoles and other source devices
  • There is no wired headphone output, although Bluetooth headphones are supported
  • The required 600 x 400 mm wall mount and mounting hardware are sold separately
  • Manufacturer peak-brightness claims do not represent calibrated in-room measurements

Tech Steve verdict

The TCL X11L is a high-end, large-screen Mini LED series built around extreme HDR output, unusually high local-dimming-zone counts and flexible gaming connectivity. The 75X11L is the most manageable and least expensive option, but it has fewer dimming zones and a lower 9,000-nit peak-HDR claim. The 85X11L offers a strong middle ground for dedicated media rooms, combining 14,400 zones and the full 10,000-nit claim without the space demands of the 98-inch model. The 98X11L delivers the largest image and 20,736-zone backlight, making it the theater-first choice for buyers with enough wall space and installation support. Every size provides native 4K/144 Hz gaming, four HDMI 2.1 inputs and expandable FlexConnect audio, but the wide feet, heavy cabinets, separately sold surround accessories and 1080p limitation of the 288 Hz mode are important tradeoffs.
